HealthDay's Dennis Thompson receives Mothers Against Drunk Driving Award

NORWALK, Conn., June 12, 2015 -- Dennis Thompson, a staff writer for HealthDay, a leading producer and syndicator of evidence-based health news, has been recognized by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) as a 2015 MADD Media Recognition Award winner for online coverage.

MADD cited Thompson and HealthDay for four articles that helped raise awareness of MADD's mission, including coverage of underage drinking, child endangerment and drugged driving. The other national media award, for TV, was given to newswoman Katie Couric.

Thompson has been a reporter for more than 25 years and previously worked at Gannett newspapers on both coasts of the United States. "I enjoy reporting on breaking news in health. My desire is to create awareness of the dangers related to drunk and drugged driving, particularly if I'm able to play a small role in the health and safety of Americans," he said.

HealthDay's Executive Editor Jeff Walsh said, "We are very proud of Dennis' accomplishment. HealthDay is very fortunate to have a journalist recognized by such a respected organization."

Founded by a mother whose daughter was killed by a drunk driver, MADD is the nation's largest nonprofit working to protect families from drunk driving and underage drinking. In recognition that substance-impairing drugs -- both legal and illegal -- can affect driving skills, MADD changed its mission statement this year to "help fight drugged driving." MADD celebrated its 35th anniversary June 4-6 during its national conference in Washington, D.C.
