WEDNESDAY, Aug. 19, 2026 (HealthDay News) -- A novel peripheral mesh closure technique, the "Louis V," designed to improve tension redistribution, enhance hemostasis, and guide granulation, seems safe and effective for large, high-tension cutaneous defects, according to a study published in the July issue of SKIN.Paulina Decker, from Miami Dermatology and Mohs Surgery, and colleagues described and evaluated the "Louis V" in a retrospective case series of patients following Mohs surgery/excision of defects initially planned for granulation treated between January 2023 and October 2024 in a private dermatology surgery practice. The technique includes a concentric edge parallel dermal running suture 2 to 5 mm from the wound edge, followed by an orthogonal running pass to create a mesh pattern, which can improve peripheral compression.Seventy-three cases were included in the study, including 48 men and 25 women. The researchers found that the diagnoses were mainly basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma (69 and 26 percent, respectively). Overall, 78 percent of the defects involved the head and neck. Wound length was a mean of 4.36 cm. In 22 percent of cases, anticoagulation was present. The median time to removal of sutures was seven days.
