(HealthDayNews) -- Hypoallergenic cosmetics are products that manufacturers claim produce fewer allergic reactions than standard products, according to the U. S. Food and Drug Administration.
But there are no federal standards or guidelines that govern the use of the term "hypoallergenic," the agency says. And manufacturers are not required to submit substantiation of their claims to the FDA.
The term "hypoallergenic" may have considerable market value in promoting cosmetic products, but dermatologists cited by the agency say in the real world, it has very little meaning.
