Health Tip: Watch Your Child's Sugar Intake

Sweets are OK in moderation

(HealthDay News) -- If your child's sweet tooth is wreaking havoc with your plans for a healthy diet, here's a list of suggestions, courtesy of the University of Michigan Health System:

  • Allow a moderate amount of sweet treats -- but don't ban sweets entirely from your child's diet. Declaring them taboo may only make your child want them more.
  • Don't keep lots of sweets around the house.
  • When you do allow your child to have sweets, be sure to limit the amount.
  • Try to save sweets for dessert, rather than as a snack. The sugar will be better tolerated after a healthy meal than when eaten alone.
