It is cleared for use in adults at outpatient clinics — the walk-in sites where most routine blood work is done — the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced Wednesday.A phlebotomist, the trained professional who typically draws your blood, still has to start each session and stay nearby in case something goes wrong. But a single phlebotomist can oversee up to three of the machines at once.That is the point, regulators said. Clinics across the country are short on trained blood-draw staff, and patients are waiting longer as a result."Blood draws are one of the most commonly performed medical procedures in the United States, yet patients may face delays due to a growing shortage of trained phlebotomists," said Dr. Michelle Tarver, who directs the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health.She said the decision reflects the agency's push to move new technology to patients while keeping the safety standards they expect.Here is how it works. The machine tells the patient how to position an arm. Then the patient or the supervisor presses a button.Aletta uses near-infrared light and ultrasound to locate a usable vein and to tell veins apart from arteries. If it cannot find a good one, it stops.If it does find a vein, the robot handles the rest: tourniquet, skin cleaning, needle insertion, tube changes, needle disposal and bandage. The supervising phlebotomist checks afterward that the tubes were filled in the correct order and to the correct volume.Several safeguards are built in. Disinfectant is applied to the skin throughout the scan, and a trained worker cleans the machine between patients. If someone moves too much mid-draw, the needle detaches, and the procedure halts. Onboard sensors can also pause the draw and alert the supervisor.The FDA based its decision on clinical data showing the robot hit the vein at rates equal to or better than human phlebotomists when it went ahead with a stick. That held across patients with different health conditions, skin tones and self-reported trouble with vein access. Side effects were rare and mild.The maker, Vitestro of Utrecht, Netherlands, said the machine is already approved and in use in Europe.
