(HealthDay News) -- Tourette's syndrome is a tic disorder that causes people to frequently repeat uncontrolled movements and sounds.
These movements commonly include rapid eye blinking or clearing the throat, and may be worsened by fatigue or stress.
Initial symptoms of Tourette's tend to appear in children between the ages of 3 and 10 years, says the American Academy of Family Physicians. But once children with Tourette's reach adulthood, fewer than half are still likely to have moderate-to-severe symptoms, the academy says.
Severe tics that affect daily activities may be helped by medication. But no one medication will help all Tourette's symptoms, that academy says. And as with many drugs, medications to treat Tourette's could have significant side effects.
