Key TakeawaysLoneliness causes illness but it is not solely a medical problem, a researcher arguesLoneliness has been linked to poor health and an increased risk of deathBut medicalizing loneliness makes it less likely that groups outside healthcare will contribute to a solution.TUESDAY, Aug. 18, 2026 (HealthDay News) — Loneliness is contributing to illness, but it’s a fool’s errand to expect doctors alone to cure this particular ailment, a new study says.Social isolation — whether it be from loss, health problems or other factors that keep people apart — has been shown to dramatically affect health, researchers reported recently in the journal Social Problems.A lack of social connection is comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day, and increases the risk of early death by roughly 30%, previous studies have found.But because loneliness is now being seen as a health problem, people are looking to medicine to cure something it cannot, researchers wrote."Not everything that relates to health belongs in healthcare," lead researcher Sofia Hiltner said in a news release. "Doctors can screen patients and connect them to services, but they cannot rebuild communities or shorten work hours."Hiltner is a doctoral student at the University of Michigan. She was drawn to the study of loneliness after seeing her grandmother become increasingly isolated later in life."After my grandfather died, my grandmother lived alone, and there was little structure in her life," Hiltner said. "She didn't seem to have many friends or activities.“It made me think about everything that happened throughout her life that led to that point. I wondered about the social policies, in addition to dynamics at the family level, that could have helped prevent that situation,” she said.For the new study, Hiltner interviewed experts and analyzed more than a decade’s worth of media, journal articles and academic papers.She found that chronic loneliness and social isolation gained traction as public health concerns once research linked them to higher risks of disease and death.But this also created what Hiltner calls a “logical leap,” in which people assume that because loneliness is related to health, they expect the healthcare system to find a solution."There is the risk that defining loneliness as medical crowds out other ways of responding to the issue," Hiltner said. "Attention, time and resources are limited. On the other hand, framing it as medical may inspire more action than would have otherwise happened."In fact, she found that members of the medical community initially resisted attempts to link loneliness to healthcare. A mix of academic researchers, government health officials and insurance companies forged the link and made loneliness a medical condition, Hiltner argued.Policymakers need to reconsider how loneliness has been framed, and promote public and political means of reducing social isolation rather than pointing toward medicine, Hiltner said."I would like them to reflect on the strengths and limitations of addressing problems through the healthcare system, and look farther upstream to understand how a problem emerges, considering ways to intervene before it occurs," Hiltner said.
