Key TakeawaysSpinal cord stimulation might help stroke survivors with impaired arm and hand functionStroke survivors had an average 32% increase in arm strength when under stimulationThey also had less muscle stiffness, and some had better hand and finger movement.THURSDAY, Aug. 20, 2026 (HealthDay News) — Spinal cord stimulation might help stroke survivors improve their arm strength and hand mobility, a small-scale study has found.Seven stroke survivors suffering from profound muscle weakness experienced an average 32% increase in arm strength as electrical pulses stimulated their spine, researchers reported recently in the journal Nature Medicine.They also had improvement in overall arm mobility and a reduction in muscle stiffness, and some also found themselves with better hand and finger mobility, researchers said.“This approach is designed to rapidly help people move their arms better, even years after a stroke,” co-senior researcher Marco Capogrosso said in a news release. He’s an assistant professor of neurological surgery and director of the spinal cord stimulation laboratory at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.“The stimulation works mostly as an assistive technology — when it’s on, people can move better,” Capogrosso said. “By stimulating the spinal cord, we can immediately allow residual connections between the brain and the spinal cord to work more efficiently, enabling better movement.”Stroke is the leading cause of arm paralysis in the United States, with about 400,000 people developing chronic arm and hand weakness each year, researchers said in background notes.Standard rehabilitation rarely provides meaningful improvement for these folks, researchers said, so for this experiment they turned toward spinal cord stimulation.The device sends electrical pulses to nerve fibers in the spinal cord, in an attempt to enhance the connection between the brain and the muscles. It has not been previously used to restore arm function following a stroke, researchers said.Seven volunteers underwent surgery to implant a pair of electrical leads along their spinal cord, and then underwent physical therapy with more than five hours of stimulation.All seven participants experienced immediate improvements in strength when the stimulation was on, regardless of the severity of their impairment, results showed. They also had reduction in abnormal muscle stiffness caused by stroke-damaged nerves.Three of the seven also experienced improved hand and finger movement with stimulation.“From a clinical perspective, even modest improvements in arm strength or control can make a meaningful difference in daily life of stroke survivors,” researcher Dr. George Wittenberg said in a news release.“Some of the improvements we measure may look small from the outside, but many stroke survivors are just on the verge of being able to do something important,” said Wittenberg, a professor of neurology and of physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Pittsburgh. “Even a small change in motor function can be very significant if it helps someone button a shirt, open their hand or return to an activity they care about.”However, lasting gains depend on continued use of stimulation, researchers added.
