Behind Bagged Lettuce

Alcohol used to kill unwelcome critters

(HealthDayNews) -- The bagged salads that you find in the supermarkets are packaged to stay fresh and healthful.

But did you know that alcohol is the key ingredient in the process?

According to the Journal of Food Protection, the salads are washed to remove insecticides, then rinsed with alcohol to kill microorganisms. They're then sealed to keep oxygen out, which keeps the alcohol from escaping.

In case you are wondering: The amount of alcohol on one salad -- 1,500 parts per million -- isn't enough to replace a bottle of wine with dinner!
