He is a faculty member at Rutgers Health-RWJBarnabas Health Center for Climate, Health, and Healthcare in New Jersey. “Although clothing size isn’t the same as a proper waist circumference measurement, it can be an early sign of unhealthy amounts of body fat,” Visaria said. “Measuring your waist, along with your weight, can help identify health risks earlier and provide an opportunity to reduce your risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke and some cancers.”The study comes as researchers are casting about for a new way to measure obesity and estimate how a person’s excess body fat might harm their health.Body mass index (BMI) has long been used to estimate excess weight and obesity, but studies have shown that it is a very imprecise measurement. BMI compares a person’s height to their weight.
