Imagine a simple saliva test that can detect breast cancer within 5 seconds… no mammography or MRI required!
Researchers have developed a new, handheld device that screens for breast cancer biomarkers using just one drop of saliva placed on a specially coated test strip.
In a recent study, they used the device on saliva samples from 17 breast cancer patients and 4 healthy people.
According to the results, the device accurately distinguished between healthy, non-invasive and invasive breast cancer cases based on the concentration of two important biomarkers – HER2 and Cancer antigen 15-3.
The authors say this technology will help eliminate cost barriers to breast cancer screening, be more accessible and eliminate low-dose radiation exposure.
They say, “The simplicity of operation and the potential for widespread public use in the future position this approach as a transformative tool in the early detection of breast cancer.”
