U.S. Pedestrian Deaths Hit a 41 Year High

Drivers hit and killed at least 7,508 pedestrians in 2022, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association. That’s a 77% increase since 2010.

The US is experiencing a pedestrian safety crisis, according to the Governor's Highway Safety Association. Their latest report estimates that drivers hit and killed at least 758 people walking in 2022, the most in 41 years. Researchers say pedestrian deaths have skyrocketed by 77% since 2010, compared to 25% for all other traffic-related fatalities.

The newest data also shows that most pedestrian fatalities occur at night. Passenger cars account for the greatest number of pedestrian crashes, but SUVs are catching up. The majority of pedestrian deaths occur in locations where there are no sidewalks, and speeding is still a major factor.

The CEO of the Governor's Highway Safety Association says the saddest part is that these crashes are preventable. He says, "We know what works: better designed infrastructure, lower speeds, and addressing risky driving behaviors that pose a danger to people walking." He emphasizes that we must do these things and more to reverse this awful trend and protect people on foot.
