COVID-19 Virus May Linger in Your Blood and Tissue for More Than a Year

Researchers analyzed hundreds of blood and tissue samples from COVID-19 patients and found viral fragments present more than a year after their infection.

The virus that causes COVID-19 can linger in the blood and tissue of patients for more than a year, according to two new studies.

Researchers analyzed hundreds of blood and tissue samples and found fragments of the Sars-CoV-2 virus present in the blood up to 14 months after infection and in tissue more than two years later.

The researchers believe these viral fragments may contribute to Long COVID symptoms, such as brain fog, digestive problems and vascular issues.

Based on their findings, clinical trials are now underway to see if monoclonal antibodies or antiviral drugs can remove the leftover virus and improve the health of patients with Long COVID.

The lead author says, “There is a lot more work to be done, but I feel like we are making progress in really understanding the long-term consequences of this infection.”
