Demands of Parenthood Causing an Epidemic of Loneliness, Survey Finds

A new survey finds the majority of parents feel lonely, isolated and burned out by the demands of parenthood.

If you’re stressed by the demands of raising children, you’re not alone.

In a new national survey, 66% of U.S. parents say the “best job” in the world sometimes or frequently leads to feelings of isolation and loneliness.

62% say they feel burned out by the responsibilities, and nearly 40% say they have no support in fulfilling the role.

Anne Helms, a mom of two who works from home, says parenting can be very lonely in a remote world.

“I'm Zoom calling people very often. However, you don't get the small talk.”

Kate Gawlik is a researcher and mother of four who runs a group for parents feeling stress.

“As a parent, that feeling of connection that somebody else is dealing with what you are dealing with can be so powerful when it comes to combating feelings of loneliness.

Anne attended the group and says the effect of connecting with other parents is immeasurable.

It makes you a better employee. It makes you a better spouse, parent, and friend, that mutual support and say is easy to find if you just let your guard down.

Gawlik recommends doing an online search for a parenting group in your community or joining a playgroup, book club, or recreational sports league.

She also stresses the importance of self-care to protect your mental and physical health.
