If you’re not regularly brushing and flossing, you may end up with a lot more than a toothache.A new study finds poor oral health is strongly linked to migraines, body aches and stomach pain in women.Researchers analyzed data from 186 women... 67% of them had fibromyalgia, a chronic condition characterized by widespread pain, fatigue and cognitive problems.Participants with the worst dental health were 60% more likely to experience moderate to severe body pain and nearly 50% more likely to report migraines, according to the results.Using advanced genomic technology, the researchers also identified four specific oral microbes associated with certain pain conditions. They say these findings suggest a potential relationship between the oral microbiome and the nervous system. The lead author says, “Our findings are particularly important to fibromyalgia, which, despite being a common rheumatological condition, is often under-recognized.”While more studies are needed, the researchers say taking good care of your dental health can help improve overall well-being.Source: Frontiers in Pain ResearchAuthor Affiliations: University of Sydney .Sign up for our weekly HealthDay newsletter
