Looking for Love? Stop Swiping So Much!

Dating app users who swipe excessively are hurting their chances of moving a relationship from online to real life, a new study finds.

When it comes to dating apps, too much swiping may hurt your chances of making a love connection, a new study finds. Choice overload is leaving many dating app users disoriented and indecisive. Researchers surveyed more than 460 people, ages 16 to 25, and found that having limitless options decreases mental well-being.

Participants who swiped excessively were more likely to engage in appearance and social comparisons, which can lead to lower self-esteem. They also reported an increased fear of being single, caused by a drop in romantic confidence and concerns about failing when others appear to be making a perfect match.

The lead author says excessive swiping can paralyze daters who get lost in the possibilities. She suggests that dating app users who are seriously interested in meeting someone face to face should try to restrict their swiping and avoid getting distracted by in-app instant gratifications, such as like and match notifications.
