ENDO: Osteoporosis Treatment Benefits Elderly Patients With Fragility Fracture

THURSDAY, July 17, 2025 (HealthDay News) -- Patients with osteoporosis who suffer a fragility fracture at age 80 years or older have better five-year outcomes if they receive treatment for osteoporosis, according to a study presented at ENDO 2025, the annual meeting of the Endocrine Society, held from July 12 to 15 in San Francisco.Gianina Flocco, M.D., from the Cleveland Clinic, and colleagues used the TriNextX health research database to identify patients diagnosed with osteoporosis who suffered a fragility fracture at age 80 years or older. The analysis in this observational study included 44,338 matched pairs of patients who were treated with bisphosphonates, denosumab, raloxifene, or teriparatide and those who did not receive any of these treatments.The researchers found that after five years of follow-up, the patients who suffered an osteoporotic fracture and received subsequent osteoporosis treatment had a lower incidence of hospitalizations (18,142 versus 20,385 patients; odds ratio, 0.814) and experienced lower all-cause mortality (11,073 versus 12,479 patients; odds ratio, 0.850)."The results of our study support the need to enhance the individualized initiation of treatment of osteoporosis, even in people who are older than 80," Flocco said in a statement.
