WEDNESDAY, Nov. 30 (HealthDay News) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved a generic version of glimepiride this week for the treatment of type 2 diabetics whose hyperglycemia either cannot be controlled by diet and exercise alone or by diet and exercise in conjunction with an oral hypoglycemic agent.

The generic drug, made by Mylan Laboratories, is approved in 1 mg, 2 mg and 4 mg tablets. It is the "AB-rated generic equivalent of Aventis Pharmaceuticals' Amaryl Tablets," according to Mylan.

The FDA also recently approved GlaxoSmithKline's Avandaryl Tablets (rosiglitazone maleate and glimepiride), for patients whose blood sugar is not adequately controlled by a combination of rosiglitazone and sulfonylurea and for patients who have initially responded to rosiglitazone alone and require additional control.
