WEDNESDAY, March 29 (HealthDay News) -- Strong visionary leadership, a sense of ownership and a patient-oriented approach are among the traits that make one Minneapolis medical group a role model for physicians, according to a case study in the March/April issue of the Annals of Family Medicine.

Leif I. Solberg, M.D., of HealthPartners Research Foundation in Minneapolis, Minn., and colleagues scrutinized 27 medical groups providing the bulk of primary care in the Minneapolis region. They identified a 15-physician group that delivered a high quality of care in terms of preventive services, primary care and coronary artery disease care.

Through interviews, observation and analysis of documents, the team identified 12 attributes associated with the group's delivery of superior care. Number one was strong visionary leadership, followed by a patient-centered approach. Other attributes included strong support for the physician-patient relationship, standardized orientation of staff, a sense of ownership and responsibility among doctors, and a highly focused and organized delivery of care. A sense of pride and joy "comes through in every interview," the report notes.

The authors write that we need to "better understand what differentiates the successful from the unsuccessful [practices]" in order to constructively promote higher levels of performance.
