TUESDAY, Sept. 25 (HealthDay News) -- A Minnesota case of cryptosporidium illness in a 6-month-old infant prompted the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to issue a consumer warning Sept. 20 against consuming Baby's Bliss Gripe Water, apple flavor, which has a code of 26952V and an expiration date of October 2008 (shown as "10/08" on the label).

The FDA urges that parents and caregivers who have given this product to children be alert for symptoms of cryptosporidium illness -- which include watery diarrhea, dehydration, weight loss, stomach cramps or pain, fever, nausea and vomiting -- and immediately call a pediatrician if such symptoms are present.

Between November 2006 and September 2007, about 17,600 bottles were distributed for retail sale and sold over the Internet. Manufactured by MOM Enterprises, Inc., of San Rafael, Calif., the four-ounce plastic bottles are packaged inside of a cardboard carton, which is labeled as follows: "Baby's Bliss. Pediatrician Recommended Gripe Water. Apple Flavor. An herbal supplement used to ease the gas and stomach discomfort often associated with colic, hiccups, and teething."

Consumers should discard bottles that match the above descriptions, according to the FDA. Questions should be directed to the FDA at 1-888-723-3366.
