WEDNESDAY, Oct. 31 (HealthDay News) -- A flow diagram based on multiple classification systems can help more accurately diagnose mild cognitive impairment, according to an essay published in the October issue of PLoS Medicine.
Fiona E. Matthews, Ph.D., from the Institute of Public Health in Cambridge, United Kingdom, and colleagues developed a flow diagram for diagnosing early cognitive impairment based on 18 classification systems described in the literature.
The researchers operationalized each classification in the population, which had been applied to a previous study on aging and cognitive function.
"It is hoped that graphical operationalization of the criteria will aid in diagnostic consistency and assist in the visualization of the current problem, with the aim of formulating a gold standard definition for both research and clinical practice," Matthews and colleagues conclude.
