Report Highlights Substance Use in Young Adults in U.S. in 2025

FRIDAY, Aug. 14, 2026 (HealthDay News) -- Cannabis use remains high among young adults in the United States, according to a report issued by the University of Michigan.Megan E. Patrick, Ph.D., from the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research, and colleagues surveyed about 120,000 people in the Monitoring the Future (MTF) Longitudinal Panel to describe substance use in 2025.According to the report, in young adults aged 19 to 30 years, past 12-month and past 30-day cannabis use in 2025 remained at or near the recent highest levels ever recorded, with significant increases seen in the past 10 years. Daily cannabis use reached an all-time study high of 11.8 percent during the previous 30 days. Vaping cannabis reached the highest levels ever recorded in 2023 to 2024, with no significant change to 2025. Other significant changes from 2024 to 2025 included increases in heroin use (from 0.2 to 0.6 percent). Decreases were seen in hallucinogen/psychedelic use from a high of 8.9 percent in 2024 to 7.2 percent in 2025. Decreases were seen in driving after cannabis use in the past two weeks (13.5 to 8.2 percent). Nicotine vaping in the past 30 days reached a high, with prevalence in the past 30 days more than threefold higher than the first measurement in 2017."An advantage of studies like MTF is the ability to identify subtle shifts and trends over time, noting areas where additional resources are needed to help us head off potential escalations in drug use down the road," Patrick said in a statement.More Information.Sign up for our weekly HealthDay newsletter
