TUESDAY, April 8, 2025 (HealthDay News) -- Thyroid disease is significantly associated with Meniere disease (MD), according to a review published online March 1 in Clinical Otolaryngology.Rui Lai, from the Affiliated Hospital of Zunyi Medical University in China, and colleagues conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the association between thyroid disease and MD. Eighteen eligible studies were included. The researchers found that the prevalence of thyroid disease in MD was mentioned in 14 studies, with a pooled prevalence rate of 8 percent. Two studies reported MD prevalence in thyroid patients, with a pooled prevalence rate of 22 percent. The incidence of thyroid disease in MD was explored in four studies, with a combined incidence rate of 23 percent. There was improvement seen in hypothyroidism symptoms and MD with thyroid hormone treatment."Although the results show a correlation between thyroid disease and MD, especially hypothyroidism, it does not mean a causal relationship between them," the authors write. "Future research is required to explore the mechanism of mutual influence between the two diseases, investigate the thyroid health of MD patients, determine the synergistic benefit in treating either disease, and take measures to prevent and treat comorbidities as much as possible."Abstract/Full Text (subscription or payment may be required).Sign up for our weekly HealthDay newsletter
