Loren Stein

Loren Stein (1957-2020) was an award-winning journalist who wrote for California Lawyer, the Christian Science Monitor, Hippocrates magazine, Working Woman, Columbia Journalism Review, The San Francisco Chronicle, the Sacramento Bee, the Boston Herald and many other publications. She was a longtime associate of the Center for Investigative Reporting in San Francisco and American University's Investigative Reporting Workshop. She was a researcher for the Emmy award-winning 9-hour documentary series, The Years of Living Dangerously, which aired on Showtime in the spring of 2014. Among other honors, she was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for her story in the Boston Herald about the abysmal conditions facing pregnant women in prisons and won first place for investigative/enterprise reporting by the California Newspaper Publishers Association. She earned a Masters in Journalism from Columbia University and a BA from the University of California at Berkeley. She is survived by her husband Hal Plotkin, her daugher Keira Plotkin, and her friends and loving family.
