(HealthDay News) -- Anemia is one of the more common blood disorders. It occurs when the body's level of healthy red blood cells drops too low.

Red blood cells contain hemoglobin, which carries oxygen to the body's tissues. If anemia is left untreated, it could cause stress on body organs, the Nemours Foundation says.

Causes vary widely, but often include inherited disorders, nutritional deficiencies, infections, or exposure to a drug or toxic substance.

Treatments, depending on the cause and type of anemia, could include iron or vitamin supplements.

Symptoms range from mild skin paleness and fatigue to dizziness and lightheadedness. Since these may also be signs of other conditions, it's best to check with your doctor.
