Topical Cream Helps Women With Arousal Disorder

Highest dose of Femprox improved arousal by more than 50%

MONDAY, May 23, 2005 (HealthDay News) -- Femprox topical cream seems to help women who have female sexual arousal disorder, according to preliminary research.

The results were to be presented at the annual meeting of the American Urological Association, in San Antonio.

The study included 400 women between the ages of 21 and 65 who were randomly assigned to use a placebo or one of three strengths of Femprox before engaging in sexual activity, up to 10 times during two treatment evaluation periods. A total of 372 women completed the study, which was conducted in China.

At the end of the first evaluation period, the improvement in mean arousal success rate from baseline was 17 percent for the women on placebo and 38.7 percent for women using the highest dose of Femprox. At the end of the second evaluation period, the improvements were 28.6 percent for placebo and 51.5 percent for the highest dose of Femprox.

Side effects reported by the women were mostly mild or moderate, reversible and short-term, according to NexMed Inc., which makes Femprox and funded the study.

It's estimated that about 47 million American women suffer from female sexual disorder. Symptoms included lack of sexual interest, painful intercourse and inability to experience sexual arousal or orgasm.
