Self-Compassion May Be the Secret to Successful Weight Loss

A new study finds dieters who are kinder to themselves after a setback have better control of their eating behaviors moving forward.

The secret to successful weight loss may be self-compassion after a setback.

A new study finds being kind to yourself helps you get back on track more quickly.

The study included 140 people who were trying to lose weight through a lifestyle modification program.

The participants reported any dietary lapses, such as overeating, and rated their mood after each setback.

The results showed those who had more self-compassion had better control over their eating and exercise habits in the hours after a setback.

The researchers say these findings show self-compassion keeps dieters from becoming demoralized.

The lead author suggests instead of telling yourself “You have no willpower,” a kinder statement would be, “You’re trying your best in a world that makes it very difficult to lose weight.”

She says this isn’t letting yourself off the hook, but giving yourself permission to move forward with a difficult goal.
