WEDNESDAY, Aug. 16 (HealthDay News) -- Women with breast implants have lower overall mortality but higher suicide rates compared to the general population, according to the results of a study published in the Aug. 15 issue of the American Journal of Epidemiology.

Yang Mao, Ph.D., from the Public Health Agency of Canada in Ottawa, Ontario, and colleagues studied 24,558 women with breast implants and 15,893 women who underwent other plastic surgery procedures in Canada between 1974 and 1989.

Relative to the general population, the researchers found that overall mortality was lower in women with breast implants (standardized mortality ratio 0.74). But they found higher suicide rates in women who received breast implants or underwent other plastic surgery (standardized mortality ratios, 1.73 and 1.55, respectively). The investigators also found no differences between the implant and the other plastic surgery groups in mortality from 20 causes of death.

"Further studies that collect detailed risk-factor data for suicides among both implant and other cosmetic surgery patient populations are needed," the authors conclude. "Serious consideration should be given to providing consultation for patients who are considered by the plastic surgeon to be at high risk of psychiatric disorder or suicide."
