TUESDAY, March 4, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- The top U.S. internal medicine residency programs have been ranked by physicians and include Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, and the University of California in San Francisco, according to an article published by U.S. News & World Report.
In a U.S. News & World Report-initiated survey conducted by Doximity through a combination of web notification and e-mails, 3,410 internists submitted 9,174 nominations for up to five programs that they believe offer the best clinical training in internal medicine.
According to the report, four residency programs received about twice as many nominations as any other program. The top four programs were at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, each of which received 600 nominations or more, and the University of California in San Francisco, which received 579 nominations. Twenty programs received between 100 and 300 nominations, and about 300 programs received 70 nominations or fewer.
"Statistical limitations [aside], no survey can objectively measure what many doctors prize most about their residency experience: rigorous, hands-on clinical training," according to the U.S. News & World Report article. "Established metrics on this crucial dimension are nonexistent."
