TUESDAY, June 27 (HealthDay News) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Sage Products of Cary, Ill., have announced a recall of certain batches of Comfort Shield Perineal Care Washcloths due to contamination with Burkholderia cepacia.
The contamination only applies to specific lots of the product, which were distributed to hospitals, medical centers and long-term care facilities in the United States and Canada. None were known to be distributed in the retail market. Burkholderia cepacia can cause serious infections including pneumonia and bacterial sepsis in patients with suppressed immune systems, as well as cystic fibrosis patients, hospitalized patients in general and certain other patient groups.
The recall was initiated by the manufacturer after it received a complaint from Canada of a bad odor from lot 1457. There have been no reports to date of patients being injured. Customers with affected lots should stop selling, distributing and using them and should liaise with Sage Products regarding product return and replacement.
