70% of kids involved in organized sports quit by the age of 13 and injuries, overtraining and burnout are the top reasons, according to a new report from the American Academy of Pediatrics.
While sports are a great way to keep kids physically and mentally fit, one author says, “some youth may feel pressure from parents, coaches and others to measure success only by performance.”
The report warns about overtraining… which can cause persistent fatigue, impaired sleep and mood changes…
And excessive training or overscheduling… which can lead to burnout, especially when young athletes are involved in multiple sports.
Injuries from overuse are also causing kids to walk off the field or court for good.
The report says their growing bones make them less resilient to repetitive stress.
Bottom line: The Academy recommends that parents and pediatricians encourage athletic autonomy, measure success on participation and effort, promote positive experiences with coaches and peers, ensure training is age-appropriate and support a variety of physical activities.
